It is Saturday 5 September 2026 and the first saturday of September and that means the VSM train bonanza Terug naar Toen (Back to Yonder) that sees every hour a steam train between the VSM's head quartes Beekbergen and Apeldoorn (connecting to the national railways network); five steam trains to Dieren (connecting with the national railways network) and every 45 minutes a steam train to and from Loenen. The first of five steam trains between Loenen and Dieren arrives at Dieren, sadly with an 18minute delay and is hauled by ex-SSN 65 018.

From 'my' train at Loenen ex-NS 2412 with Plan-D coach was photographed. When NS ordered Class 2400 in 1951, the firstbatch of the Class, 2401-2413 was delivered inturqouise livery to match with the coaches that had a slightly brighter turqouise (the difference is visible inthis picture). Before 1956 NS had second thoughts about turqouise, that can become dirty rather quickly, and decided to use Berlin or Prussian blue for hauled passenger stock. All Diesel locomotives of Classes 2200 and 2400 turned dark brown for freight service untill the 1970s,that saw the rise of dark grey and yellow as the new corporate identity. In 1990 Class 2400 went out and some were sold to SNCF for construction work on high speed lines, 2412 amonst them. After that, she had a brief spell with VFLI that painted the loco bright grey with yellow fronts -the fourth livery this loco wore. In 2012 VSM bought the loco and brought backhte days of that brief turqouis spell with Netherlands State railways.

A nice touch, since in DB and DR days, Classes 23 and 23.10 were fully assigned to passenger operations.

RXP 9904 stands at Amersfoort on 1August 2026. This loco entered service in 1983 as NS 1618 and became Railogix 1618. Railogix gave 1618 this colour scheme that leaned to the SNCF Multiservice colours albeit with a red ventilation grille instead of the grey. In 2026 RailExperts -who organised special raiwlay journeys and decided to buy their own traffic after the demise of LOCON Benelux- bought the 1618 and restored her in full working condition, for now retaining the Railogiox colours.

A Giraffe on the tracks! On 4 October 2026 HSL 1508 -since 2025 carrying this interesting Giraffe design- made a rare appearance on the Betuweroute freight artery and is seen here at Valburg. Since HSL 1508 normally shunts in the Rotterdam port area, such outings are quite a rarity.

Ex-NS, now VSM 2233 banks one of the each 45 minutes operating shuttle trains between Beekbergen and Loenen out of Loenen during the annual Terug-naar-Toen train bonanza. Diesel passenger trains in the netherlands have almostalways been operated by DMUs; Diesel loco haulage being very rare; onlyin the proximity of Winterswijk and Zevenaar a few peak hour trains were loco hauled. The passenger stock on this train is the hauled versionof Mat'24 Blokkendoos and VSM each year does a very fine job inrecreating the few Diesel loco hauled trains fromthe past -in combination with German Einheitsdampfloks or GDR ReKos.

VSM 2412 stands in front of the brand new loco shed at Loenen on 5 September 2025 during the Terug-naar-Toen train bonanza. The loco shed was completed just a month before the TnT opened. The ex-NS 2412 and het Plan D coach show the brief spell of turquise hauled passenger Diesel trains with NS from 1951-1954. In 1954 Diesel locos of the series 2200 and 2400 were repainted brown and hauled stock turned into Prussian blue -reputedly because dirt was less visible on darker colours.

The decoration on the kettle's dooor of VSM 44 1593 is a wink to the fact, that in the 100th year of ex-DRG Class 44 only one 44 in Western Europe is inoperational condition and that that one is outside Germany!
