It is Saturday 5 September 2026 and the first saturday of September and that means the VSM train bonanza Terug naar Toen (Back to Yonder) that sees every hour a steam train between the VSM's head quartes Beekbergen and Apeldoorn (connecting to the national railways network); five steam trains to Dieren (connecting with the national railways network) and every 45 minutes a steam train to and from Loenen. At Loenen, a photo freight to Eerbeek awaits departure time and is hauled by 23 071 and a Class 64. A nice touch, since in DB and DR days, Classes 23 and 23.10 were fully assigned to passenger operations.

NS Class 2200 were deliverd all in this brown livery for freight locomotives and deployment on passenger services within NS have been rare. Here VSM 2233 banks a steam hauled shuttle train out of Loenen to Beekbergen.

From 'my' train at Loenen ex-NS 2412 with Plan-D coach was photographed. When NS ordered Class 2400 in 1951, the firstbatch of the Class, 2401-2413 was delivered inturqouise livery to match with the coaches that had a slightly brighter turqouise (the difference is visible inthis picture). Before 1956 NS had second thoughts about turqouise, that can become dirty rather quickly, and decided to use Berlin or Prussian blue for hauled passenger stock. All Diesel locomotives of Classes 2200 and 2400 turned dark brown for freight service untill the 1970s,that saw the rise of dark grey and yellow as the new corporate identity. In 1990 Class 2400 went out and some were sold to SNCF for construction work on high speed lines, 2412 amonst them. After that, she had a brief spell with VFLI that painted the loco bright grey with yellow fronts -the fourth livery this loco wore. In 2012 VSM bought the loco and brought backhte days of that brief turqouis spell with Netherlands State railways.

Each year SSN locos are guests with the Terug naar Toen Weekend of the VSM -and when the SSN at Rotterdam have their steam weekend in October, VSM sends steamers of her own -in all respects, the relation between SSN and VSM is a warm one!
