The "Festival Suisse de la vapeur" (Swiss Steam Festival 2025) - The RhB ABe 4/4 I No. 35 is on its Riviera Belle Époque train on the (return) journey from Vevey to Chaulin. The train has arrived in Blonay and is now waiting for the opposing train to pass before continuing to Chaulin.

At the traditional Gotthelf Market in Summiswald, the OeBB special train from Balsthal, which has become a tradition in recent years, reaches its destination Summiswald Grünen. The train is hauled by the Mallet steam locomotive Ed 2/2 196 of the SCB, built in 1893 at the J.A. Maffei locomotive factory (Munich).

After the travel group had certainly enjoyed a good meal at a winery in Schafis, the OeBB RCe 2/4 607 (built in 1938/manufacturer SLM, MFO, BBC, and SAAS) returned to Balsthal. I was able to photograph the elegantly designed lightweight fast railcar passing through Ligerz, where only part of the former freight shed is visible. The RCe 2/4 607 was the last of seven delivered Red Arrows. The great success of these elegant trains quickly made the limited seating capacity a problem, and the railcars were subsequently used mainly for charter services. In 1974, the OeBB purchased the RCe 2/4 607 and operated the now blue-painted railcar between Oensingen and Balsthal. After an overhaul in 1988/89, it ran again as the "Red Arrow" for the OeBB. In 2022/23, the OeBB restored the railcar to its original form, as it can now be seen and experienced. June 19, 2025

The SCB C 4 196, from 1902 SBB Ed 2x2/2 7696 with the current UIC number 90 85 00 07 696-7, is shunting in Sumiswald Grünen. The Mallet locomotive was built in 1893 at the J.A. Maffei locomotive factory (Munich). The steam locomotive was in service on the Hauenstein Line until 1915. Subsequently, it operated on the Le Pont - Le Brassus route with a short stay in Bavaria in 1918. In 1938, the locomotive was retired and stored until it was refurbished in 1958 and 1993. Today, the steam locomotive belongs to SBB Historic and is maintained and operated by the OeBB.

The traditional Gotthelf Market takes place in Sumiswald, and for this market, the "Emmental Railway" operates several steam trains on the Sumiswald Grünen - Wasen i.E. route. The picture shows the E 3/3 853 of the Dampf Bahn Bern association entering Sumiswald Grünen. The steam locomotive was built in 1890 in Winterthur under factory number 629 and delivered as F3 853 to the J-S (Jura Simplon Railway). At the SBB, the shunting locomotives of series E 3/3 with operating numbers 851 - 853 were assigned to group 82 and received the numbers 8571 - 8576. In 1911, locomotive E 3/3 853 received a new boiler and was sold to the RVT, where it remained in service until 1928, after which it was used as an "industrial shunting locomotive" at Von Roll in Gerlafingen and Klus. When diesel locomotives made the steam locomotive obsolete, it was saved from scrapping by the Düby Foundation by being handed over to the DBB. After an overhaul in 1983, it was put into operation, among other places, on the Sensetal Railway. Following another overhaul in 2021, the DBB E 3/3 853 is mainly used on the Emmental Railway route Sumiswald Grünen - Wasen i.E. Today, the E 3/3 853 carries the UIC number 90 85 0008 573-7. In the background, the ABe 4/4 No. 12 with the Bodan salon car and the VH-MThB BDt can be seen, which arrived in Sumiswald just over half an hour ago. Additionally, the OeBB steam train from Balsthal will soon arrive in Sumiswald. In short: today the Gotthelf Market takes place in Sumiswald.

Swiss Steam Festival 2026 - Although I'm fortunate enough to attend the Swiss Steam Festival quite often, one might think that I'd eventually run out of things to photograph. But as this picture shows, that's not the case. This is thanks to the presence of the G 2/2 TICINO! While the A 3/5 may be one of the most beautiful steam locomotives in my opinion, the G 2/2 TICINO has truly captured my heart, especially since I had the opportunity (in 2018) to ride in its cab for the first time. I was therefore all the more delighted that the G 2/2 TICINO was enriching this year's steam festival.

After initially thinking I'd hardly be able to photograph the locomotive in the crowd, this opportunity presented itself: Coming from Blonay, the HG 3/4 No. 3 steamed towards Chamby with its train, while the small TICINO, supplied with coal/wood and water, waited for its shunting maneuver into the museum station.

At the St-Gingolph terminus, located on the border with France, the variety of rolling stock is rather limited. However, over time, a number of different types have accumulated; I wouldn't go all the way back to the C 5/6 series, but from the BDe 4/4 and NINA trains to the Domino series, there has been quite a bit to see here. Until last year, BLS RABe 528 MIKA trains were also used here once a day (on weekdays), but with the commissioning of the new EVO Flirt trains, this is now a thing of the past. Instead, these new EVO trains are now seen more frequently in St-Gingolph: The picture shows Region Alpes RABe 533 702 (RABe 94 85 0 533 702-2 CH RA), which arrived in St-Gingolph as R91 6118 from Brig (14:06) and will return to Brig as R91 6123 (departing at 14:51). In the meantime, the train is being cleaned, or rather, photographed by me.

With the 2024/25 timetable change, a new concept was introduced in the Jura region. Among other changes, the RER Jura trains now run every half hour to Delle, but the direct connections to Meroux have been discontinued. In return, SNCF TER trains now run hourly (on weekdays) from Delle to Belfort. The photo from Delle shows the arriving SBB RABe 522 210, which is turning around here for its return journey to Porrentruy, and the SNCF X 73755, operating as a TER to Belfort.
