Once a day (and direction), from Monday to Friday, the IR 56 and RE 56 cross at Grenchen Nord, providing not only a colorful scene but also hope that the Pronturter region will not be cut off from the rest of Switzerland in the future. The SBB RABe 522 210 as RE 56 4561 from Bonfol to Biel/Bienne crosses at Grenchen Nord with the BLS RABe 528 132, which is traveling as IR 56 1861 from Biel/Bienne to Basel SBB.

Due to construction work between Iselle and Domodossola, the BLS RABe 528 operate as R1 hourly (instead of every two hours) from Brig to Iselle. In Iselle, there was then a bus connection to Domodossola. Of photographic interest, however, were the BLS RABe 528 turning around in Iselle, as the next three pictures show.

The BLS RABe 528 122 is leaving Brig. In itself, nothing special. But this RABe 528 is operating for Region Alpes and runs to Saint Gingolph (and back).
Region Alpes has leased this service from BLS on weekdays because passenger numbers have increased significantly and the capacities of Region Alpes will only be improved with the delivery of the EVO railcars.

BLS passenger train departs a BLS station – in itself, a perfectly ordinary occurrence – but this everyday occurrence was something one had to wait a full 110 years for! When the BLS/MLB line began operating in 1915, it was taken over by the SBB, initially – unusually for BLS – even with steam locomotives. The intended France-Italy traffic on the line gradually evolved, due to territorial changes in Alsace, into increasingly domestic traffic between Basel and the western Swiss Plateau. The reactivation of the Delle-Belfort line revived the historical concept of the service, but ridership fell far short of expectations. Therefore, since the timetable change, a half-hourly service has been offered on the Biel/Bienne-Basel SBB line, with BLS trains now supplementing the existing ICN trains and finally being used on the MLB BLS network. The image shows BLS RABe 528 132 operating as IR56 1858 from Basel SBB to Biel/Bienne, just leaving the BLS/MLB Grenchen Nord station. January 13, 2026

If one had to wait 110 years, or rather, I had to wait 63 years until a BLS train finally appeared at Grenchen Nord station, I'll venture to post another picture on this topic. I would have liked to have taken the pictures earlier, but I had to wait until the fog and workdays cleared and I had the opportunity to make a quick trip to Grenchen; with the certainty that I would definitely revisit this colorful subject later this year. The picture shows the BLS RABe 528 132 as IR56 1861 on its way from Biel/Bienne to Basel SBB, stopping and waiting for the oncoming train at Grenchen Nord.

With 20% more passengers, the Alpes region is reaching its capacity limits and has therefore leased a RABe 528 MIKA train from BLS. This train covers two to three round trips from Monday to Friday, freeing up Domino trains to reinforce other services. The image shows BLS RABe 528 109 in St-Gingolph, waiting to depart for Brig as train R 91 6125.

After the BLS RE 11 4545 with the BLS RABe 528 111 and 101 from Biel/Bienne arrives in Iselle, the line ends on the RE 1 to Bern. But first, the BLS car tunnel train must depart with the Re 4/4 195 to Brig. A few words about the location of this photo. I was standing on the sloping road next to a wall and was able to comfortably position my camera on the wall's edge. The whole thing was observed by Italian border guards, which guarantees that the law was fully observed. August 17, 2024

Due to construction work, buses are running as a rail replacement service between Iselle and Domodossola. In addition, the BLS is running its RE 1 trains to Iselle every hour (instead of every two hours). The photo shows a BLS RABe 528 departing for Bern in Iselle.

his image of the train entering Iselle station from the Iselle Tunnel reveals an unusual train route: BLS RE 11 4545 is traveling from Biel/Bienne (departure at 7:34) to Iselle di Trasquera (arrival at 9:58). The train served Lyss, Zollikofen, Ostermundigen, Gümligen, Münsingen, Thun, Spiez, Mülenen, Reichenbach im Kandertal, Frutigen, Kandersteg, Goppenstein, Hohtenn, Ausserberg, Eggerberg, and Brig; therefore, it did not travel via Bern. The train consists of BLS RABe 528 111 and 101. Several buses are available for onward travel due to construction work. The property line between FS and SBB lies in the 169-meter-long Iselle Tunnel, shown here, of which 144 meters belong to SBB.
