The SCB C 4 196, dating back to the private railway era, carries the UIC number 90 85 00 07696-7 and is shunting in Sumiswald Grünen. But first, the story in order: A limited locomotive fleet and increasing traffic prompted the Swiss Central Railway (S-C-B) to acquire new freight locomotives. Tight curves argued against a locomotive with the D axle arrangement, so the S-C-B reverted to the Mallet system developed in 1884 by the Geneva engineer Anatole Mallet. In terms of design, the locomotive is based on the Gotthard Railway Ed 2x 3/3 151 (built in 1890), which led to the same weaknesses also appearing in the S-C-B locomotive design, particularly the susceptibility to slipping. The steam locomotives C 4 No. 181 - 186 were built in 1891 by J.A. Maffei, Munich. Two years later, the S-C-B ordered ten more C 4s, which featured some modifications that gave the locomotive more power but further exacerbated the slipping problem. When the S-C-B was nationalized in 1902, the SBB took over the 16 locomotives and grouped them under Group 67. I suspect the group designation was a kind of class designation; however, it did not seem to catch on, as the S-C-B C4 196 was subsequently classified as Ed 2x 2/2 7696. With the commissioning of the new base tunnel (NBS) at Hauenstein, the Ed 2x 2/2 lost their operational area and were retired except for Ed 2x 2/2 7687, 7690, 7693, and 7696. The four mentioned were used on the BPr line Le Pont - Le Brassus. The Ed 2x 2/2 7696 seen here was even leased to Bavaria in 1918, where it was used on the Spessart line. In 1938, operations ended in the Vallée de Joux; the Ed 2x 2/2 7696 was stored in Villeneuve, underwent refurbishment for the 100th anniversary of the old Hauenstein line, returned once more to its old home, and then to the Swiss Museum of Transport, until it was overhauled in
