Since the Gotthard Highway Tunnel, which opened in 1981, needs to be renovated, they have the luxury of building a second tube during the renovation. After the renovation, both tubes will offer more safety by separating traffic directions, but will only be allowed to have one lane per tube. It will be interesting to see whether this will be adhered to... The excavated material will be transported to Flüelen by train.
