To my surprise, the TER 96634 was operated with Corail coaches, and at the end, the control car seen here was running. The TER 96634 is on the route from Genève to Valence-Ville and was photographed as the train passed through La Plaine. Much more interesting would have been the BB 22200 running at the front, but since a Léman-Express RABe 522 was standing right behind me, I couldn't see the train coming from Genève. I am standing at the westernmost end of platform 1; the track on the left in the picture ends shortly before with a buffer stop. Also interesting (and the intended subject of the photo) is the old SNCF DC catenary mast, which was adapted as needed during the transition from DC to AC. But now it seems that the station at La Plaine is being rebuilt and the seventy-year-old masts will have to give way. April 16, 2026

In Vernayaz MC, the SNCF Z 800 002 and the TMR BDeh 4/8 No. 21 meet, with the identical railcars only distinguishable by their markings indicating the owner, and operationally they run on one network or the other depending on demand.

Since I started photographing in France, I've often seen the beautiful BB 67400 diesel locomotive. However, its area of operation has now shrunk considerably, providing a good reason to photograph the locomotive again specifically. In Strasbourg, a few SNCF BB 67400s are used in regional service with RRR trainsets. Since two RRR trainsets have the capacity of roughly three to four modern trains, and the round trips during peak hours cover very few kilometers, it's not yet worth it to use several new multiple-unit trains. This is likely the main reason why these elegant locomotives are still in service. In Strasbourg, the well-maintained SNCF BB 67599 is leaving the depot.

The 12.4 km long TMB (Tramway du Mont-Blanc) rack railway has been running from Saint Gervais les Bains Le Fayet station to the Nid d'Aigle in the Mont Blanc massif since 1913, with the first section to Col de Voza having been opened in the summer of 1908. A curious feature is the ‘naming’ of the vehicles: they have no identification or number but are named after the director's daughters, and each train has its own colour. At the hairpin bend between Le Fayet and St-Gervais, the green ANNE with the control car of the same name is on its way to Col de Voza; the rest of the route is currently closed due to avalanche danger.
