Nice Ville - Nice Ville echoed in my ears as we finally arrived in Nice after more than fifteen years. The SNCF TGV 6805 from Lyon Part Dieu (right in the picture) brought us to Nice, but we had already enjoyed a few days of Côte d'Azur air in Saint Raphaël. And to our delight, the Nice station revealed itself in its old splendor!

Arguably the most beautiful tram stop: perfectly integrated into the structure of Nice's port area, the Port Lympia tram stop is the terminus for lines 2 and 3, which run to the airport and Saint-Isidore, respectively. Alstom Citadis 405 trams are operated by Tramway de Nice on these routes.

In Ventimiglia, slightly in the background, the FS Trenitalia iC 745 is waiting to depart for Milano Centrale. As is typical for this route, it is hauled by two E 414 locomotives, both of which, like the entire train, are sporting the new iC livery. Next to it, on the right, is the SNCF Z55519. The SNCF Regio 2N PHD train will soon depart for Les Arcs.

A major day for the SNCF: Over this holiday weekend, a large number of passengers are traveling to the Alps for their winter sports vacations, while others are already heading back home. For this reason, I traveled to Saint-Gervais-des-Bains-Le Fayet to observe the TGV holiday traffic; at a station otherwise served exclusively by TER regional trains, there were quite a few TGV trains to be seen.

The 12.4 km long TMB (Tramway du Mont-Blanc) rack railway has been running from Saint Gervais les Bains Le Fayet station to the Nid d'Aigle in the Mont Blanc massif since 1913, with the first section to Col de Voza having been opened in the summer of 1908. A curious feature is the ‘naming’ of the vehicles: they have no identification or number but are named after the director's daughters, and each train has its own colour. At the hairpin bend between Le Fayet and St-Gervais, the Blue MARIE with the control car of the same name is on its way from the Col de Voza to the Saint Gervais les Bains Le Fayet train Station. 21 February 2026

In 2007 125 years of the Gotthard line in Switzerland were celebrated massively and two of the participants came steaming from the Czech Republic. From then on, it has been a constant dream of Steam Story Agency rto invite Swiss steam traction on a train fest on Czech soil. Finally, with the last edition of SSA's museum train bonanza in and around Benesov u Prahy, the dream came true with DDF's 241A65 -a French machine. With an extra train from Praha via Ceske Budejovice, 241A65 enters Benesov u Prahy on 18 September 2026.

At St-Gervais, the narrow-gauge SNCF Z 850 052 unit awaits departure for Montroc-le-Planet. The onward journey to Vallorcine could not take place due to weather conditions (snow and avalanches).
The image also shows how the standard-gauge tracks are spanned by a simple overhead contact line, while the narrow-gauge railway is electrified via a third rail.
