France offers not only fast trains but also very cozy ones: Shortly after the summit station La Rhune (905 m above sea level), the Chemin de fer de la Rhune He 2/2, built in 1914 by SLM/BBC, with a maximum speed of 9 km/h, is on its first train of the day heading down to the valley, where valley station refers to the mountain pass Col de Saint-Ignace at 198 m above sea level. In the background, the view glides over the mighty Atlantic as well as the two towns of Ciboure and Saint-Jean-de-Luz. April 12, 2024

Major action day at SNCF: This holiday weekend, numerous passengers want to travel to the Alps for their winter sports holidays or are already heading back home. For this reason, I went to Saint-Gervais-des-Bains-Le Fayet to watch the TGV holiday traffic there. Right upon arrival, the first TGV appears: TGV set 864 departs Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet (departure 10:23) as TGV 794 to Nantes (arrival 19:27). On its long journey, the TGV stops at Sallanches-Combloux-Megève (10:28/10:32) and Cluse (Haute-Savoie) (10:43/10:48), then only again at Massy-TGV (16:20/16:26), Le Mans (17:16/17:23), and Rennes (18:06/18:12), and most likely runs via La Roche sur Foron - Annecy. On the left in the picture is an SNCF TMR Z 850 / BDeh 4/8, parked here waiting for its next deployment. February 21, 2026

The Region 2N PHD 55113 UIC: 94 87 59 00 025-0 F-TRSI is operating as Zou! TER on its way from Nice Ville to Marseille and has reached Saint Raphaël. The TER service from Nice to Marseille is operated by Transdev; it is the first privatized line in France. The trains have replaced the SNCF Corail coaches and run hourly instead of every two hours as before. The picture also shows the rather unappealing station of Saint Raphaël, although the town itself is beautiful. September 17, 2026
