On 3 March 1988 NS DE-II 171 quits Simpelveld to Kerkrade in the last year of NS operations on this Miljoenenlijn -a nice, but due to the geography rather expensive line to build. After NS left, ZLSM was founded to save the line for touristic trains with steam traction and op till this day, ZLSM has survived, albeit as part of a regional effort to raise income by a touristic train in one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Netherlands.

After ten years of restauration, ZLSM, ex VSM 52 532 is active again sincs May 2026. Here she stands at Schin op Geul on 19 August 2026 before a fully loaded steam train to Simpelveld. This train arrived 20 minutes earlier from Simpelveld, so a quick run round of the old steamer was on order -and performed perfectly.
