Something different: in addition to the recently acquired Lima N-gauge RBe 4/4 1435, I've owned an N-scale model of the U36B Santa Fe ATSF 353 diesel locomotive with three cars for many years. Reason enough to showcase the vehicles. The idea is to build a (divided) fairly small model railway for the existing vehicles instead of a diorama. Since technical clarifications regarding the overhead line for the Swiss section still need to be finalized, I began by interpreting a small station located somewhere between Canada and Mexico. For this, I can draw on a few old prototype photos from a trip to Florida. Of course, the design is a challenge in terms of space. At least I can show the first pictures. The palm tree is home-made, as is the loading ramp (still under construction). The vehicles are from Bachmann (made in China), and the tracks are from Lima, Roco, and Fleischmann (made in Italy, Germany, Austria, and Romania). April 14, 2025
Quelque chose de différent : en plus de la RBe 4/4 1435 Lima en échelle N récemment acquise, je possède depuis de nombreuses années un modèle à l'échelle N de la locomotive diesel U36B "Santa Fe" ATSF 353 avec trois voitures. Raison suffisante pour présenter ces véhicules. L'idée est de construire un réseau ferroviaire (divisé) assez petit pour les véhicules existants plutôt qu'un diorama. Comme des clarifications techniques concernant la caténaire pour la section "suisse" doivent encore être finalisées, j'ai commencé par interpréter une petite gare située quelque part entre le Canada et le Mexique. Pour cela, je peux m'appuyer sur quelques anciennes photos du prototype prises lors d'un voyage en Floride. Bien sûr, la conception est un défi en termes d'espace. Au moins, je peux montrer les premières photos. Le palmier est fait maison, tout comme la rampe de chargement (encore en construction). Les véhicules sont de Bachmann (fabriqués en Chine), et les voies proviennent de Lima, Roco et Fleischmann (fabriquées en Italie, Allemagne, Autriche et Roumanie). 14 avril 2025

My U36B Santa Fe ATSF 353 runs quite well, but the running noise after fifteen years of inactivity made me think that it might not be impossible for the locomotive to break down on the track with a transmission failure. Then I'd have a suitable layout, but no locomotive. To prevent this from happening, New Haven (NH) ALCO RS1 0667 rushed to the rescue from the far north and is now supporting Santa Fe No. 353. April 18, 2025
Mon U36B "Santa Fe" ATSF 353 fonctionne assez bien, mais le bruit de fonctionnement après quinze ans d'inactivité m'a fait penser qu'il ne serait pas impossible que la locomotive tombe en panne sur la voie à cause d'une défaillance de la transmission. Dans ce cas, j'aurais un réseau adapté, mais pas de locomotive. Pour éviter cela, la New Haven (NH) ALCO RS1 0667 est venue à la rescousse depuis le grand nord et soutient maintenant la Santa Fe n° 353. 18 avril 2025

The beautiful Lima RBe 4/4 1435 railcar, which I finally acquired after many years, is really very nice, and I got a lot for my money, as the railcar seems to be somewhat lavishly constructed, probably 1:140 or so. Well, that's not really a criticism*, but rather a side topic... *otherwise, I could have bought the Piko RBe 4/4. 29.04.2025

The Mallet steam locomotive 2-8-8-2 - Y6b 2197 of the Norfolk & Western, which is powerful even in H0, fights its way through the snow. The design of the Mallet model locomotives is based on information provided by the U.S.R.A. (United States Raitroad Administration) introduced during the First World War. The class Y6b locomotives were delivered from 1936. Basically, the Y6b class was designed to pull heavy freight trains at 30 mph, but in good conditions up to 50 mph could be achieved. The model of this articulated locomotive type Mallet “Y 6 b” from the “Norfolk & Western” is probably a good 50 to 60 years old and is a very impressive model implementation in terms of size. It doesn't seem entirely logical to me why the engine was squeezed into the driver's cab with so much space in order to then drive the distant bogies using long cardan shafts. The tender is prototypically equipped with two three-axle Buckeye bogies, which are also used to collect power. The model probably hasn't been driven for a good twenty to thirty years. After I dismantled the model and degreased and re-oiled the moving parts, it has been running again since yesterday, even if I have both the cars and the route for the discontinuation of the mighty model missing. La locomotive à vapeur Mallet 2-8-8-2 - Y6b 2197 du Norfolk & Western, puissante même en H0, lutte à travers la neige. La conception des locomotives modèles Mallet est basée sur les informations fournies par l'U.S.R.A. (United States Railroad Administration) introduites pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Les locomotives de la classe Y6b ont été livrées à partir de 1936. Fondamentalement, la classe Y6b a été conçue pour tirer des trains de marchandises lourds à 30 mph, mais dans de bonnes conditions, des vitesses allant jusqu'à 50 mph pouvaient être atteintes. Le modèle de ce type de locomotive articulée Mallet « Y 6 b » du « Norfolk & Western » a probablement entre 50 et 60 ans et constitue une réalisation de modèle très impressionnante en termes de taille. Il ne me semble pas tout à fait logique que la machine ait été comprimée dans la cabine de conduite avec autant d’espace pour ensuite entraîner les « bogies » éloignés à l’aide de longs arbres de transmission. La tender est équipé de manière prototype de deux bogies « Buckeye » à trois essieux, qui servent également à collecter l’énergie. Le modèle n’a probablement pas roulé depuis une bonne vingtaine à trentaine d’années. Après avoir démonté le modèle, dégraissé et ré-huilé les pièces mobiles, il fonctionne de nouveau depuis hier, même si je manque à la fois des voitures et de la voie pour la mise hors service de ce puissant modèle. 12 janvier 2025
