The 12.4 km long TMB (Tramway du Mont-Blanc) rack railway has been running from Saint Gervais les Bains Le Fayet station to the Nid d'Aigle in the Mont Blanc massif since 1913, with the first section to Col de Voza having been opened in the summer of 1908. A curious feature is the ‘naming’ of the vehicles: they have no identification or number but are named after the director's daughters, and each train has its own colour. At the hairpin bend between Le Fayet and St-Gervais, the green ANNE with the control car of the same name is on its way to Col de Voza; the rest of the route is currently closed due to avalanche danger.

The SNCF Z 800 003 (94 87 0000 806-3), operating as TER 18959 from Les Houches to Vallorcine, leaves at Montroc-le-Planet. The tunnel in the background can also be used by cars when the pass road is closed, although rail traffic will then be restricted.

View from the road crossing of the Gièvres train station, where the Blanc-Argent shammal gauge line intersects with the standard gauge. In the background, the SNCF narrow-gauge diesel multiple unit X 74503 was waiting to continue its journey. The diesel railcar runs as TER 61285 from Salbris to Valençay and has a fairly long stop period of nine minutes. Gièvres train station. In Gièvres there is a connection to the standard gauge line Tours - Vierzon. Unfortunately, there were no standard gauge trains running when TER 61285 was in service. The long stay didn't make sense to me, but it was a good opportunity to take more photos of the train. The relatively long stay of the TER 61285, which I had already noticed when planning this photo excursion, was also the reason for photographing this train in Gièvres. April 7, 2024

France not only offers fast trains but also very comfortable ones: Shortly after the departure from the valley station, the fer de la Rhune He 2/2, built in 1914 by the SLM/BBC, arrives with its first train of the day at Vmax 9 km/h the journey to the summit of La Rhune. The “valley station” refers to the Col de Saint-Ignace pass at 198 m above sea level. As you can see, the train also runs in bad weather.

We drove up the Col de St-Ignace again in cloudy weather, but there was a slightly better opportunity to photograph the Chemin de Fer de la Rhune.
