The traditional Gotthelf Market takes place in Sumiswald, and for this market, the Emmental Railway operates several steam trains on the Sumiswald Grünen – Wasen i.E. route. The picture shows the E 3/3 853 of the Dampf Bahn Bern association departing from Sumiswald Grünen. The steam locomotive was built in 1890 in Winterthur under factory number 629 and delivered as F3 853 to the J-S (Jura-Simplon Railway). At the SBB, the shunting locomotives of the E 3/3 series with operating numbers 851 – 853 were assigned to group 82 and received the numbers 8571 – 8576. In 1911, the locomotive E 3/3 853 received a new boiler and was sold to the RVT, where it was in service until 1928, after which it was used as an industrial shunting locomotive at Von Roll in Gerlafingen and Klus. When diesel locomotives made the steam locomotive obsolete, it was saved from scrapping by the Düby Foundation by handing it over to the DBB. After an overhaul in 1983, it was operated, among other places, on the Sensetalbahn. After a further overhaul in 2021, the DBB E 3/3 853 is mainly used on the Emmentalbahn route between Sumiswald-Grünen and Wasen i.E. Today, the E 3/3 853 carries the UIC number 90 85 0008 573-7.
In the background, the ABDe 4/4 12 Weinfelden of the Historic Mittel-Thurgau-Bahn association can be seen with the Bodan coach and the BDt, which shows that the traditional Gotthelf Market is well known and popular far beyond the local borders.

About the Sumiswald-Grünen Wasen i.E. route: This line was opened together with the Ramsei - Huttwil route by the RSHB on June 1, 1908, but could not be operated profitably. In 1994, the VHB converted the line to bus operation. Since 2014, the ETB has taken over the route, and besides freight traffic to the RUWA siding, museum trains run on the line.

The traditional Gotthelf Market takes place in Sumiswald, and the Emmental Railway (Emmentalbahn) runs several steam trains on the Sumiswald Grünen - Wasen i.E. line for this event. The picture shows the E 3/3 853 of the Bern Steam Railway Association traveling from Sumiswald to Wasen near the Oberei stop.

This steam locomotive was built in Winterthur in 1890 under factory number 629 and delivered to the Jura-Simplon Railway (J-S) as F3 853. The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) assigned the E 3/3 series shunting locomotives, numbered 851-853, to Group 82 and renumbered 8571-8576. In 1911, locomotive E 3/3 853 received a new boiler and was sold to the RVT (Regional Transport Company) where it remained in service until 1928, when it was used as an industrial shunting locomotive by Von Roll in Gerlafingen and Klus. When diesel locomotives made steam locomotives obsolete, the Düby Foundation saved this one from being scrapped by transferring it to the DBB (Deutsche Bahn-Gesellschaft). After an overhaul in 1983, it entered service on the Sensetalbahn, among other lines. Following another overhaul in 2021, the DBB E 3/3 853 is primarily used on the Emmentalbahn line between Sumiswald-Grünen and Wasen i.E. Today, the E 3/3 853 bears the UIC number 90 85 0008 573-7. With an Emmental Railway steam train traveling to Wasen i. E., the E 3/3 853 (UIC 90 85 0008 573-3) reaches the Oberei stop; a stop on request. Although the line is no longer served by scheduled passenger trains, the station building remains in operation, serving as a bus stop, and the waiting room serves as a farm shop. And once a month—according to the posted timetable—a museum train of the Emmental Railway runs from Wasen to Huttwil and back. June 14, 2025
