Gone are the days of loco hauled international daytime trains in Western Europe. On 10 September 1999 international train with 101 034 and NMBS stock stands at Aachen Hbf for the ride to Oostende via Liége and Bruxelles-Midi. The 101 however, will be swapped for an NMBS DC-machine and cannot continue into Belgium.

On 19 February 2026 DB 101 075 pushes an IC train from Hamburg into LÜbeck Hbf, where a Class 218 Diesel locomotive will be coupled to the train for the further leap to Rostock Hbf.

Loco swap at Itzehoe on 14 February 2026: DB 101 145 pushes an IC from Hamburg into Itzehoe. During a twelve minute stop the electric loco will get off the train whilsyt at the front end a DB Class 218 will take the lead for ther non-electrified ride from Itzehoe to Westerland (Sylt).
