On the Lausanne - Biel/Bienne line, long-distance traffic is firmly in the hands of the SBB ICN RABDe 500. However, due to the construction-related closure of the Fribourg - Bern line, two additional train pairs per day are running from Neuchâtel to Lausanne and back to relieve the scheduled ICN trains. Typically, one of these train pairs is operated by two RABe 502 Twindexx trains. The photo shows the Twindxx, which is otherwise rarely seen on this line, with the RABe 502 225 and the RABe 502 402 Biel/Bienne as IR 30071 from Lausanne to Neuchâtel passing through Chavornay.

Two SBB ICN RABDe 500 trains are operating between Essert-Pittet and Ependes VD as IC5 519 on the way from Lausanne to Rorschach. The Lausanne-Yverdon line was opened on May 7, 1855, from Bussigny to Yverdon, and two years later, service to Lausanne began. On November 1, 1921, the Chavornay-Ependes section was upgraded to double track, and on May 14, 1933, the Ependes-Yverdon section of the line, which had been electrically operated since February 1, 1925, was upgraded to double track. It should be noted that the double track upgrade of the Lausanne-Bienne/Bienne line began in stages in 1872 and is now nearing completion with the final section, Ligerz-Twann. July 12, 2025

In addition to the ICNs oictures (see ID 54934) , I also photographed the RABe 501 Giruno trains, which have since dominated the Gotthard axis. While they may be dominant, they are not a common sight on the Gotthard Panorama Route : Due to planned maintenance work in the Gotthard Base Tunnel, most IC/EC trains will run via Göschenen - Airolo from Monday to Friday from January 13 to January 24, 2025. After the sun disappeared behind the mountains in Airolo at midday, it appeared in Göschenen at the appropriate time from midday. The photo was taken near the entrance signal in Göschenen and shows the two SBB RABe 501 016 Glarus at the front and 501 008 Monte Ceneri at the rear as IC 21 10671 on the journey from Basel SBB to Lugano. How times change: a few years ago, I would have turned up my nose and not photographed the ICN passing through Airolo. Today, I'm happy to be able to photograph an ICN among all the Giruno trains: an SBB RABDe 500 passes by as an IC on its way north.
