SNCF C 20155 (UIC No.
(ID 59421)
SNCF C 20155 (UIC No. 97 85 1 932-0)—formerly SBB Ee 3/3 II 16515 and originally SNCF C 20155—owned by the "Team C-20155" association, is seen departing Balsthal, heading toward Klus. The three-light headlamp configuration indicates that this is a scheduled train movement. Designed as a shunter, the dual-system Ee 3/3 II was acquired by the SNCF—in a batch of nine units—to haul freight trains between Saint-Louis and Muttenz. This decision was prompted by complaints from local residents following the electrification of the SNCF line between Mulhouse and Basel. It is quite remarkable, considering that around 1960, Basel was still a stronghold for steam traction in Switzerland! Incidentally, years later, similar complaints prevented CC 72000 diesel locomotives from hauling long-distance trains (such as those on the Paris Est–Basel route) all the way to their destination; in most cases, the locomotives had to be changed in Belfort or Mulhouse. But back to the SNCF C 20155 (UIC No. 97 85 1 932-0)—formerly SBB Ee 3/3 II 16515—belonging to the "Team C-20155" association. The fact that this rare, one-off class of SNCF locomotive—which spent over a decade with the SNCF, followed by forty years in shunting service with the SBB, and was later saved from the scrapyard and restored to its original SNCF appearance—might seem surprising, and the decision was not entirely without controversy. Personally, however, I think it is an excellent outcome; it really allows this beautiful locomotive to stand out. Moreover, while the locomotive may have been used by the SNCF for mainline service—and in cross-border operations spent roughly half its time under the SNCF and half under the SBB—if one considers the actual territorial border, the SNCF C 20150 units traveled only three kilometers within France out of the total 15-kilometer stretch between Saint-Louis and Muttenz.
