Locally developed rail buses were tested by SLR. One set is made out of two road passenger motor buses connected to run from both ends like a DMU. Amazingly this was seen at Pattipola, the highest rail station in the country ( 6000 feet Above Mean Sea Level) on an excursion tour few years ago. Few units are deployed in remote less demand routes but not on the hill country line due to low power genaration on engines. Picture was taken in year 2000 summer.

Class M7 -803 Brush locomotive in intercity livery is hauling a local train in Mar 2007. Subsequently these locos were withdrawn from all hill country routes after  a major accident and did not get a chance to work on ICE trains.

Originally imported as a steam rail car in 1927/8 and in 1972 it was converted to diesel hydro-mechanical rail car powered by Rolls-Royce engine. Original Class M5 Hitachi locomotives became  unsuccessful and subsequently some of them rehabilitated with Paxmon & Caterpillar engines.The one in the picture is a CLASS M5 -779 fitted with a 1600 hp Caterpillar 3516 DITA engine seen at Peradeniya in 2010. Driver had to slow down due to workers on the track and had to throttle as he was short of the platform. Black smoke is a clear indication that he had given too much power.

Watawala  Railway Station which is located in a remote area in the main hill country line. Looking at the roof tiles it is evident that it was repaired recently may be due to the fact that Wattawala records highest annual rainfall in the island. But the walls needs a new coat of  paint. railway arrived this area  during 1880-1885.
