BLS passenger train departs a BLS station – in itself, a perfectly ordinary occurrence – but this everyday occurrence was something one had to wait a full 110 years for! When the BLS/MLB line began operating in 1915, it was taken over by the SBB, initially – unusually for BLS – even with steam locomotives. The intended France-Italy traffic on the line gradually evolved, due to territorial changes in Alsace, into increasingly domestic traffic between Basel and the western Swiss Plateau. The reactivation of the Delle-Belfort line revived the historical concept of the service, but ridership fell far short of expectations. Therefore, since the timetable change, a half-hourly service has been offered on the Biel/Bienne-Basel SBB line, with BLS trains now supplementing the existing ICN trains and finally being used on the MLB BLS network. The image shows BLS RABe 528 132 operating as IR56 1858 from Basel SBB to Biel/Bienne, just leaving the BLS/MLB Grenchen Nord station. January 13, 2026
