A scene from Büren an der Aare, featuring a term typical of the railway jargon of that era: Stücker. This was the name given to local freight trains that served stations once or twice a day—delivering freight wagons or collecting them—essentially handling the inbound and outbound movement of goods. At almost every station, less-than-carload (LCL) freight was also handled, which meant that at least one covered freight wagon had to be placed at the goods shed or retrieved from it. Naturally, with so much shunting involved, a Stücker train would spend a considerable amount of time on its journey. On platform 1 in Lausanne, the SBB Historic Ae 4/7 10976 awaits departure with its training train. The locomotive was delivered in 1931 and remained in active service until 1995, when, after 64 years of service, it was incorporated into the SBB Historic locomotive collection. The SBB training train is traditionally hauled by old-style locomotives, which, while not exactly a perfect match for the train, provide an opportunity for the locomotives to be moved and for railway photographers to photograph them. November 1, 2025
