Rabbit 218 833 stands aside at Hannover Hbf on 20 September 2016. Class 218.8 were used for incidental haulage of stranded ICE emus. Nowadays, the last engines of these class are deployed for car carrying shuttles between Niebüll and Westerland on Sylt island.

DB 218 321 calls at Niebüll on a grey 16 February 2026 as one of the very last IC trains between Niebüll and Westerland (Sylt) with Class 218 haulage. From March DB Class 245 have taken over this service and from 1 May complete new train sets called ICE-L are scheduled to take over the long distance trains betwen the two places. 

One of the few remaining loco hauled services is the RE22 bewtween Lübeck Hbf and Bad Kleinen, albeit, that even here 2/3 of the trains are DMU now -meaning Class 218 is here on the4 decline too. One of the few loco hauled RE22 enters Lübeck Hbf on the morning of 20 February 2026 with 218 438. 

On 15 February 2026 DB 218 321 quits Niebüll and passes the form signal post on her journey to Westerland (Sylt). From 1 May 2026 both C;lass 218 haulage and form signal post will have disappeared from Niebüll. 
