The Mallet steam locomotive 2-8-8-2 - Y6b 2197 of the Norfolk & Western, which is powerful even in H0, fights its way through the snow. The design of the Mallet model locomotives is based on information provided by the U.S.R.A. (United States Raitroad Administration) introduced during the First World War. The class Y6b locomotives were delivered from 1936. Basically, the Y6b class was designed to pull heavy freight trains at 30 mph, but in good conditions up to 50 mph could be achieved.

The model of this articulated locomotive type Mallet “Y 6 b” from the “Norfolk & Western” is probably a good 50 to 60 years old and is a very impressive model implementation in terms of size. It doesn't seem entirely logical to me why the engine was squeezed into the driver's cab with so much space in order to then drive the distant bogies using long cardan shafts. The tender is prototypically equipped with two three-axle Buckeye bogies, which are also used to collect power.

The model probably hasn't been driven for a good twenty to thirty years. After I dismantled the model and degreased and re-oiled the moving parts, it has been running again since yesterday, even if I have both the cars and the route for the discontinuation of the mighty model missing.

La locomotiva a vapore Mallet 2-8-8-2 - Y6b 2197 della Norfolk & Western, potente anche in scala H0, si fa strada attraverso la neve. Il design delle locomotive modello Mallet si basa su informazioni fornite dalla U.S.R.A. (United States Railroad Administration) introdotte durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Le locomotive della classe Y6b sono state consegnate a partire dal 1936. Fondamentalmente, la classe Y6b è stata progettata per trainare treni merci pesanti a 30 mph, ma in buone condizioni si poteva raggiungere fino a 50 mph. Il modello di questo tipo di locomotiva articolata Mallet “Y 6 b” della “Norfolk & Western” ha probabilmente tra i 50 e i 60 anni ed è una realizzazione modellistica molto impressionante in termini di dimensioni. Non mi sembra del tutto logico perché il motore sia stato inserito nella cabina di guida con così tanto spazio per poi azionare i "carrelli" distanti tramite lunghi alberi cardanici. Il tender è equipaggiato in modo prototipico con due carrelli "Buckeye" a tre assi, che vengono utilizzati anche per raccogliere energia. Il modello probabilmente non è stato utilizzato da una ventina o trentina d’anni. Dopo aver smontato il modello e aver sgrassato e oliato nuovamente le parti mobili, da ieri funziona di nuovo, anche se mi mancano sia le carrozze che il percorso per la messa fuori servizio del possente modello. 12 gennaio 2025 
