The Mallet steam locomotive 2-8-8-2 - Y6b 2197 of the Norfolk & Western, which is powerful even in H0, fights its way through the snow. The design of the Mallet model locomotives is based on information provided by the U.S.R.A. (United States Raitroad Administration) introduced during the First World War. The class Y6b locomotives were delivered from 1936. Basically, the Y6b class was designed to pull heavy freight trains at 30 mph, but in good conditions up to 50 mph could be achieved.

The model of this articulated locomotive type Mallet “Y 6 b” from the “Norfolk & Western” is probably a good 50 to 60 years old and is a very impressive model implementation in terms of size. It doesn't seem entirely logical to me why the engine was squeezed into the driver's cab with so much space in order to then drive the distant bogies using long cardan shafts. The tender is prototypically equipped with two three-axle Buckeye bogies, which are also used to collect power.

The model probably hasn't been driven for a good twenty to thirty years. After I dismantled the model and degreased and re-oiled the moving parts, it has been running again since yesterday, even if I have both the cars and the route for the discontinuation of the mighty model missing.

De Mallet-stoomlocomotief 2-8-8-2 - Y6b 2197 van de Norfolk & Western, die zelfs in H0 krachtig is, baant zich een weg door de sneeuw. Het ontwerp van de Mallet-modellocomotieven is gebaseerd op informatie verstrekt door de U.S.R.A. (United States Railroad Administration) die tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd geïntroduceerd. De locomotieven van de klasse Y6b werden vanaf 1936 geleverd. In principe was de klasse Y6b ontworpen om zware goederentreinen te trekken met 30 mph, maar onder goede omstandigheden kon tot 50 mph worden bereikt. Het model van dit scharnierende locomotieftype Mallet "Y 6 b" van de "Norfolk & Western" is waarschijnlijk een goede 50 tot 60 jaar oud en is een zeer indrukwekkende modeluitvoering qua grootte. Het lijkt mij niet helemaal logisch waarom de motor zo in de bestuurderscabine werd gepropt met zoveel ruimte om vervolgens de verre "bogies" aan te drijven met lange cardanasassen. De tender is prototypisch uitgerust met twee drieassige "Buckeye" bogies, die ook worden gebruikt om stroom af te nemen. Het model is waarschijnlijk al twintig tot dertig jaar niet meer gereden. Nadat ik het model had gedemonteerd en de bewegende delen had ontvet en opnieuw geolied, rijdt het sinds gisteren weer, ook al mis ik zowel de wagens als de route voor het uitrijden van het machtige model. 12 jan 2025 
