This was Introduced to the service in 1934 when the railway was dominated with steams. this picture was taken in 2000 at a railway gala, built by Armstrong Whitworth with 122 HP, this creature is still in working order.

locally built 8 of these Y1 shunter were introduced to the service in 1972. The one in the picture was the only one which survived was on display at a railway show in Colombo in 2000.
