Scanned photo of 143 635 in S-Bahn livery at Essen Hbf on 23 July 1998. As soon DR Class 243/DBAG 143 became available on the West-German railways, many a 143 found her way into the west. S-Bahn Rhein-Rühr delpoyed a batch of these ex-DR locos where they released the 111s hitherto in S-Bahn service (111 111-188 with special S-Bahn livery). 

The Fildern region is still quite rural, as this picture near Echterdingen shows, even if the city already seems to be spilling out of the basin into the landscape.
